Wool Dying

I had a go at dying wool for the first time the other day. It was fun experimenting with colour.

I mixed some of the dye powders together to give different tones of green, red and orange colours It's a bit of a lucky dip to how well it will turn out for a beginner. I threw in a few slips that I tie-dyed to used up some of the dye. I plan to use the wool for needle felting, probably for nature table dolls, to sell as well as the slips at Katie's school end of year fair. I found the arms hard to make on the doll. The arms that I did seemed a bit chunky so I hid them behind some flowers.

One day I would like to grow a garden for dying wool.

What a beautiful blog. Thanks for your comment on mine. I love hearing form people on the other side of Mother Earth. Gorgeous felting and stuff. Blessings.

Lovely dyeing - in fact, lovely blog! I'm so glad you left a comment - I've enjoyed reading yours. On the sock thing, Thuja is a great pattern (and so quick because it's thick wool)

Yes do have a dye garden they are fantastic places to have. You could always start off with a few pots.

Anne - one of my favourite books is called Colour by Victoria Finlay. She traveled around the world visiting all the places where different pigments come from. It's a great read - especially thinking about the garden you would like to plant for dyes - what a lovely idea. It's published by Sceptre. I would love to have a go at dying things but it seems so hard!
